Silla Reja 01

Dining chair

In Santa María la Ribera, the ornate steel grilles over doors and windows, known as rejas, are there to keep people out. Silla Reja 01 borrows their arch and puts it to the opposite use: an invitation to sit down. It’s the first in a series of chairs drawn from Mexico City’s ironwork.

Three nested arches of steel tube, bent with the same rolling technique ironworkers use for rejas, form the backrest and rear legs in one continuous line. The tubes pass through a stainless steel disc, welded in place as the seat. The chrome picks up everything around it, so the chair takes on a little of every room it’s in. In an entryway or at the head of a dining table, it’s as much sculpture as seat.
